VISION

“The Chinese use two brush strokes to write the word 'crisis.' One brush stroke stands for danger; the other for opportunity. In a crisis, be aware of the danger - but recognize the opportunity.”

- JOHN F. KENNEDY

In the 1950’s and 60’s when American’s first got a taste of yoga through westerners who had studied abroad and Indian teachers who came to teach in the USA, one could imagine that the practice was not unilaterally well received.   Many early American yogis were seen as grungy hippies by conservative culture and it took optimism, endurance, and faith for them to build the inviting studios we enjoy today.  While we owe a great debt to the early teachers who had the foresight to recognize the value in yoga, we can also look to them as example of visionaries who inspire our practice today.

Even during dark and desperate times there are certain prophetic people who can see beyond obvious challenges and fears.  Every Pulitzer Prize was won by someone who shut their complaining mouths and took the risk to follow the thread of instinct.  We can use the same principles today in our yoga (and life) practice.  If you asked the early yogis what drew them to trek all the way to India to study with a little-known guru, or quit their jobs to devote more time to their fledgling group of students, they were most likely motivated by passion for yoga and an intuitive sense of knowing they were pursuing something worthwhile.  Each one of us has certain doors of possibility that can only be accessed by allowing our internal daydreams to flow without restriction.

It’s easy to sit around paralyzed with worry about the future, but it feels really crappy.   Take a minute to imagine your life exactly the way you like it to be today.  Then ask yourself what YOU can do to make things different. What’s your vision?

WORKSHOP HIGHLIGHT:
                   Nicki Doane & Eddie Modestini

Devotion to yoga and the desire to share with and give back to the world are what motivate the teaching of Maya Yoga with Eddie Modestini and Nicki Doane. Yoga is spirit in action, and as Eddie and Nicki teach, they inspire people to find a place of spirit  inside themselves, recognizing the profound connection between the self and spirit.  Eddie and Nicki have been studying yoga in India for years and have been deeply influenced by the teachings of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and B.K.S Iyengar.  Their unique approach to Vinyasa yoga strengthens all aspects of your being through dynamic structural alignment, conscious breathing, and practical yogic philosophy; helping students find the deeper life of yoga.  Eddie and Nicki strive to teach each student that yoga is about being fully present in the
moment and discovering that we are truly all One.  One Love.  One People.  One Heart.    One Destination—Our Higher Self.

MAYA YOGA VINYASA FUSION

SANSKRIT

sanskritSanskrit Glossary
by Annie Carpenter

SAMTOSA is the second of the Niyamas, which is the second limb of Patanjali’s Astanga (eight-limbed) Yoga. Following the Yamas, or five disciplines,  are the niyamas which are observances that we cultivate to better understand and evolve our relationship with our inner world.  The second of these five is samtosa, contentment.

The yogis believe that contentment, as opposed to a state of happiness, is to be cultivated.  Here we accept whatever comes, both the good and the bad.  We learn not to compare or judge events or people or ourselves, and thus move away from the depths of suffering as well as the heights of joy. We move to a place of equanimity and deep acceptance of what is.  Our feelings of regret for the past and wishes for the future begin to melt away and we rest, peacefully in the here and now.

Once again, Patanjali presents us with a seemingly simple concept and asks us to pause and patiently consider our nature, bringing us to one of the steps to that great temple variously called peace, freedom or liberation.  Surely, one of those steps is samtosa, the cultivation of contentment.

If you have a Sanskrit word that you'd like to learn about, please contact annie@anniecarpenter.com, and we'll address it here.
